Despite its prominent listing near Portarlington in the OSI road atlas, like so many castles in Ireland on private land (the majority are), there is still no official public access to it. A motte and bailey castle by William Marshall existed on the site in 1203, and it is suggested that he also built this keep, although a later date of c.1250-60 is more likely when Lea was held by Maurice Fitzgerald, 2nd Baron Offaly. In the ensuing wars down the centuries it changed hands several times, only to be blown up by Cromwellian forces in 1650. As a consequence the four storey keep is very ruinous with few surviving distinguishing features, retaining just one of its four corner towers.
