Ballingrane Junction
R3644 | taken 39 years ago, Monday, 14 July, 1986 | by The Carlisle Kid
A CIE 001 class locomotive brings a laden coal & oil train from Foynes to Ballina into Ballingrane Junction. Opened from Limerick to Ballingrane in 1856, the line was extended to the port of Foynes in 1858. Ballingrane became a junction in 1867 with the opening of the "North Kerry" line to Newcastle West - which can be seen on the left and closed on 3 November 1975. Despite protests from the port authorities at Foynes, that line also closed on 16 December 2001.
